Bennie played tackle for the Army football team, and graduated from West Point in 1950, entering the U.S. Air Force. He flew more than 9,000 hours as a bomber pilot throughout his career, including cockpit time in the B-29, B47, B52, and B57. He accumulated more than 350 combat flying hours in Viet Nam. He received his fourth star as Commander, Air Training Command; then led the Strategic Air Command until his retirement in 1985. Editor's Note:Bennie and I got our wings at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, OK in 1951.
