MAJ. GROVER J. REES, JR., USMC - DEC. 13, 2008

He served as an Infantry Platoon Leader before earning his wings in 1953. He flew the AD-6 Skyraider and the F-14B  Fury before resigning in 1962. He had received a BS Degee from SLU, and entered the business world as a financial advisor following retirement from USMC.

L.B. "Ken excelled in most anything mathematical, especially Skinny,, where he was seldom stumped. Energetic, easy to get along with, ever so helpful and friendly, Ken should have little trouble reaching his goal in life." His essay on the "Sensuous U.S.S. Missouri" was published in  Shipmate and "The Halls of Navy".

L.B. "His sandy head was so far above the lurking dangers of academics that he had plenty of time to devote to extracurricular activities and win a host of friends."
 

CDR. GARLAND R. KILBOURN, JR., USNR - OCT. 20, 2008

LB " An amazing man, Rex; he found time to play basketball, pitch softball, sail - and star, too. He was invariably on time, but he was always sporting about it. Rex always started out five minutes late, but somehow he could make it every time." He was on active duty in the Supply Corps for five years, including service  as Supply Officer on Cony (DD-508) during the Korean War, and then completed twenty years in the Naval Reserve. In 1976 he started  Kilbourn, Inc., a  home security company, which he sold in 1986, moving to Long Point, MD. A true Patriot, he served his family, his community and his country with limitless zeal and dedication.

LB "Though a very conscientious fellow, Bob likes to take life easy and never gets excited or loses his temper; but when given a job to do he won't stop until it is finished in better than a satisfactory manner. Very neat and methodical in his word and dress, Bob will be as difficult to stop off the gridiron as on."

Hank was assigned USS SICILY, USS HORNET, Flight Training in 1950-1952; VP-34, Trinidad, 1952-1955; OPNAV, Washington, 1955-1958; Industrial Planning in BuAer, 1958-1959; Graduate School of Business (MBA), Stanford University, CA, 1959-1961; and VP-31, NAS North Island thereafter. Following retirement in 1977 he was Owner/President of Logistic Technology Applications, Inc. in Fontana, CA.  

CAPT. FRANK CRAMBLET, USN - JUN. 25, 2008

LB "His extracurricular activities were legion: soccer, basketball, reading, softball and aviation. Frank's sense of humor, his personality, and some fiery red hair gave him his host of friends. His love for flying should give him a busy career in Naval Aviation". Frank served honorably in the Vietnam and Korean wars flying missions in the A-4 Skyhawk. In 1967 he was Commanding Officer of Attack Squadron 65, affectionately known as the "World Famous Flying Tigers". Captain Cramblett was a survivor of the 1967 USS Forrestal fire and zuni rocket and bomb explosions which killed 134 men. In the 1970's he proudly served as Commanding Officer of the Roosevelt Roads Naval Base in Puerto Rico, as well as various administrative positions at the Pentagon.

LTC. CARL S. FAIRBANK, JR., USAF - MAY 6, 2008

LB " .. Doug fought one or two battles with the Academic Department, but won by a decision. In the spring and fall it was tennis, in the winter a pile of good books filled the gap. A hop could only mean dragging, and a free weekend meant a quick trip to Jersey. No strain, keep smiling, Doug will come out on top."

CDR. WILLIAM H. P. HOPKINS, USNR - FEB. 11, 2008

Bill was stationed on minesweepers along the East Coast 1950-1955, and instructed ROTC at Holy Cross University until his release from active duty in 1957. He served as  head of industrial Engineering for the Nashua Corporation; then was General Manager and Treasurer for the EC & WL Hopkins/Granite State Feed Company. He remained active in the Naval Reserve until retiring as a Commander in 1978, and retired from Corman Bag Company at age 74, thereafter enjoying a life of travel and community activity.

CPT. THEODORE A. DEBACKER, USAF - MAR. 3, 2008

LB "Coming straight from the enlisted ranks of the Navy, Al brought fun and life with him. He amazed us all with his linguistic abilities by standing high in French and in learning Portuguese in a few short weeks. .... Ted always made profitable use of his constant good humor and geniality." He was assigned to the Matador Missile Program, Patrick AFB, FL. His last tour with the Air Force  was  with the 1st Tactical Missile Squadron, Bitburg, Germany, where he was promoted to Captain, out of turn, under the "Exceptionally Well Qualified" Program. He assisted in the development of our nuclear deterrent capabilities, serving in the first pilotless bomber squadron. Ted was an advanced design Project Engineer, later Sales Manager, in the Nuclear Division of the Martin Company, Baltimore, MD. He joined the Ramo-Wooldridge Company in 1958, and pursued a career in research and development in private industry.

LTJG. LEWIS JOHN N. BLYDE, JR., USN - JAN. 26, 2008

LB "Made his mark early in Plebe summer with his great take-off of The Spook, in the summer musical, great savoir in French,..long remembered for reading the thickest books...literary contributions to the Trident, "Convoys to Murmansk" ...his grasp of current affairs...sitting taller than most of us stood...unlimited repertoire of cockney jokes...some good, most bad." He was on USS Roanoke, USS Wisconsin, was ComBatCruLant Liaison Officer to ComOpDevFor , and USS Wilkinson. He resigned in 1954 to join the New York Telephone Company where he was a district manager. He worked for AT&T Bell Labs and Citicorp, later founding his own consulting firm.

LCDR. RICHARD F. DRAKE, USN - JAN. 26, 2008

LB "Dick came to Navy from Iowa State College where, as a Sigma Chi, he majored in Electrical Engineering. Many times, after a Navy day, he wished he were still driving a truck in Muscatine." He served on the USS Crow and USS Oriskany, and resigned his commission in 1954. He served as an Iowa State Representative for eight years prior to serving as State Senator fo twenty-eight years. He liked to listen to classical music and received many awards for his service to community and country.
 

 VADM. CARL THOR HANSON, USN - JAN. 12, 2008

LB " A savvy guy, he had plenty of time for extracurricular activities, and his sax playing and his vocal talents were heard in the NA-10 and the choir. Each spring he devoted his energies to crew, where his team mates gave him his nickname of 'Cookie'." He was a Rhodes Scholar, with a specialty in Political Military Analysis, and served as aide to the Secretary of the Navy and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His assignments at sea included commands of a minesweeper, a destroyer, a Cruise Destroyer Group, and an Attack Carrier Battle Group. Upon retirement with 36 years of service, he was president and CEO of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, where he worked from 1982 to 1992. Returning to Tucson, he served on the Board of Directors for the Tucson Boys Chorus.
